Virtek’s Iris System Enables Komatsu to Reduce Costly Templates and Ensure Quality in Manufacturing

WATERLOO, Ontario, Canada. Virtek Vision International Inc. is pleased to announce the purchase of its flagship Iris Spatial Positioning Systems (SPS) by Komatsu America Corp. Iris SPS helps to guide welders in the manufacture of its large-scale mining trucks. Iris uses advanced vision technology to locate weldments in 3D space, and the use of lasers to project precise images of where to assemble hardware.

Shane Conger – Sr. Tool Design Engineer, said “We were looking for a laser templating system to eliminate significant costs associated with the creation, replacement, and storage of our current physical templates.”

Komatsu has also implemented Virtek’s Iris SPS Part Verification module. The module provides real-time feedback to assemblers ensuring missing parts and misplaced parts are detected and fixed before their frames move to the next stage in their processes. Iris SPS is the only solution that specifically addresses that challenge with our part verification module which also generates reporting that assists further with quality assurance documentation.

Shane Conger – Sr. Tool Design Engineer, “We get engineering changes all the time, often making new templates that were being fabricated obsolete before arriving at the plant. These engineering changes now take minutes, not weeks to hit the production floor. By implementing Virtek’s Iris SPS with part verification module, we hope to not only reduce physical templates but also increase production speeds to meet future demands.”

The Iris system eliminates differences between “as built” and “as designed” because assemblers are always working with the most current CAD files. With Iris, Engineering changes are passed to the shop floor in minutes so assembly can continue without delays and additional expense. Iris SPS allows the shop floor assemblers to build parts using “virtual tooling” which are not constrained by the physical limits of templates and measuring tools.
