Rod Emery, P.E., is Vice President of Operations for RedViking. In an engineering career spanning more than 25 years, Rod has managed turnkey assembly line projects, large scale technology insertion programs, and highly engineered machine design projects. Before taking his current role managing Operations for RedViking, Rod directed the product development and implementation of turnkey assembly lines with Wingspan™ Battery-free AGVs. A widely sought author, Rod has been published in Design News, Automation World, and Plant Engineering among others. He has also spoken at numerous engineering events. Rod is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Electrical Engineering.

What’s Driving Assembly Line AGVs?
As product lives become shorter and multi-model factories become the norm, the need for flexible assembly line technologies is growing. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), with their independent movement, variable speeds, and easily changed fixtures, create flexibility that traditional conveyance can’t match. In this presentation, I’ll review case studies on why AGVs might or might not be the best choice for your plant. I’ll also address when battery-power is the best choice, and when it makes sense to use inductively powered battery-free AGVs. Last, I’ll talk about ways to gradually phase in AGVs to prove out their capabilities and give manufacturing teams time to become comfortable with this technology.
